Nottinghamshire is bordered by Derbyshire to the West, South Yorkshire to the north, Lincolnshire to the West and Rutland/Leicestershire to the south.

The main river in the county is the Trent which runs west to east until it reaches Newark before turning north towards the Humber Estuary. Other rivers in the county include the Idle, Soar, Meaden Maun and Witham.

The principal towns in the county are Nottingham, Mansfield, Worksop, Newark and Retford.

Brief History of Nottinghamshire:

Roman:
The Trent seems to have been the main Roman boundary in 47AD with the Fosse Way and Ermine Street providing the main routes for the Leio IX Hispana.  Sometime after this the army moved into the the county to subdigate the Brigantes.

A major Roman town on the Trent was at Littleborough on its western bank. Several villas exist in the county including Southwell where current excavations are underway.
