Whilst many have fond memories of British Summers filled with long hot lazy days, the reality of the quintessential British summer strikes a more familiar chord with Charles II observations that "...The British summer, consists of two fine days and a thunderstorm..". However, the interchangeable British Weather has done nothing to deter the growing popularity of camping. As outdoor activities are reborn and re-branded as `cool`, more people than ever are choosing to spend their summer at music festivals, camping in tents, or taking their families on camping trips throughout the UK. Camping has a long history as a recreational past time in the UK. From Cunningham Camp in Howstrake on the Isle of Man, which opened in 1894, and regularly saw up to six hundred (reported as predominantly male) visitors per week. To the Campers Handbook, published by Thomas Hiram Holding in 1908, that eventually led to the to a succession of Camping clubs, most recently incarnated as the International Federation of Camping Clubs. Indeed, camping is so popular in Britain that in 2001 the National Caravanning and Camping Week was established. The week was designed to gather large numbers of campers and to encourage them to make the countryside more camping friendly! There was also a growth in popularity of camping holidays in the 1930`s, due to a large drive to encourage people to associate `outdoor` activities with health and fitness. The exponential growth of popularity in music festival goers since the mid nineties, has no doubt contributed to the large uptake in camping equipment being sold in the UK. Glastonbury, V and Reading, (to mention but a few) all provide ample `camping` spots, and festival goers do not seem weary at all about using their camping equipment to take camping trips at other times. Of course, another presiding factor in the growth of camping holidays in recent years has been the economic crisis that has dominated on a global scale. As families struggle to find way to find alternative holidays, that are within the financial constraints, and are suitable for children of all ages and can be accessed at will during the long six weeks summer school holidays. Camping may also seem like a more appealing option since design technology has made such innovative advancements. Today’s tents and camping equipment and supplies, are made from cutting edge technology. Indeed, these modern tents are a long way from the tents of yesteryear. Modern tents are lightweight, easy to assemble, spacious and comfortable.
